Upcycled Wedding Dress – Something New From Something Old.

Good Morning Friends!! As promised, today we are going to start up cycling this fabulous, vintage wedding dress that was lovingly gifted to me by a very dear friend. This dress was her mother’s hand made dress from 1950. Having it in her closet was making her feel sad. She knew I would be able to turn it into something beautiful for someone else to enjoy. I am so passionate about this project for so many reasons! First, a little back story. I owned and operated a successful bridal boutique for 15 years. I sold gorgeous, new wedding dresses from all over the world. Over the years I watched the prices of dresses rise at an unbelievable rate. By the time I sold the business, I was starting to feel that the amount of money our brides were paying for weddings as a whole was getting totally out of control! These brides were under such pressure to have ALL the things in their weddings to make sure their peers would think they did it right. And let me say, the number of “requirements” was unbelievable! When my husband and I got married everything was so much simpler!!! and cheaper!

Lately, as we have been navigating this turbulent time in our history, I have started seeing things so much more clearly. We have been held hostage in a matrix for so long that we are not even aware that it exists! We are pummeled from all sides with pressure to be consumers and to consume more and more and more. The more money we spend, the richer our captors become. To be able to purchase all the things we have been lead to believe that we need to keep up with modern society, we have to work harder and harder. The more we work, the more taxes are collected from our paychecks which again adds to the coffers of our captors. As our unnatural desire for all the material possessions constantly increases, we have to work more and more hours. Now we have to have two incomes and we are still strapped all the time. As the feelings of being strapped get stronger and stronger, the more anxiety and fear we start experiencing. It is the most vicious circle imaginable! And we have been programmed to believe this is how we have to live our lives!!! It is all a lie!!!!

Another problem with our massive consumer habits is the amount of trash we are accumulating! We throw out an unbelievable amount of clothing every year. Sometimes we donate our unwanted clothing, which is a help, but the amount of fabric that is discarded every single year could easily clothe every single one of us! Now, I am not saying that I want to wear clothing that is outdated, but, for me, I have started a crusade to make all the things I need from recycled fabrics. For the whole year of 2022 I vow not to purchase any “new” fabric items. I will go to the donation centers and gather used fabrics to create what I want or need. I can guarantee you that the things I create will be amazing!!!!

I realize that sewing has become a lost art. This is another tool the ones who control the matrix have used against us. They have made it part of the program to have us choose not to learn the old skills that everyone had just a couple of generations ago. They have made it seem normal for us to not be able to take care of ourselves. We no longer know how to grow food, preserve food, make clothing or use herbal medicines! All we know how to do it to buy these things – which has led us down the path to more and more consumerism. Is this making any sense to anyone? The more we have to buy, the more money we have to make. Then we are back in the loop. We have to work more and more hours taking us away from our homes and our families to work for companies that can replace us at the drop of a hat! We have zero security that our jobs will be there for us when we need them! If we lose our jobs, we don’t have the skills needed to survive with less. Do you see the vicious circle? Do you see how dependent we have become on others to provide what we need to survive? Now is the time to start reclaiming our freedom from consumerism.

OK, time for me to get off of my soapbox and on to getting this vintage gown turned into something new and wonderful for less than $50.00 in supplies! This is just the first of many wedding gowns we are going to restyle on this channel. Wedding gowns are what I know and what I love so we are going to up cycle many of them. I don’t know who they will end up being for, but I feel confident the universe will bring the right bride to each dress we do.

Here are the quick sketches of what I have planned for this gown. It will be a two piece dress with just a thin strip of tummy showing. The beading at the top will be removed as it has become damaged over the years. I will also remove the sheer mesh at the top. The back will be opened up and will have a lace up, corset back added for a bit of that medieval look I love so much. Along the neckline Kevin and I will be pouring small, resin buttons containing tiny little flowers to include the treasures that nature provides. These decorative buttons will be added at 5 points along the top of the bodice and possibly down the corset back. The skirt will be turned into a fit and flare style skirt with a multi tiered lace insert down the back from the top of the thigh to the bottom. The top of the skirt will also be fitted with a corset closure. Before I insert the lace tiers in the back, I will be dip dying the different layers in an ombre of earthy greens. Also before I insert the lace tiers I will be dip dying the entire skirt and the lower half of the sleeves in a lighter shade of the earthy green. It will gradually fade from the ivory at the top to just the slightest tint of green on to a finished medium green at the very bottom. I have choses to use the little bits of nature in the buttons and the earthy green as I want to honor the earth and all she has provided for us through the entire time life has existed on this planet.

I know that one person deciding not to buy clothes for a year is not going to save the planet. Frankly, nothing we can do is going to save the planet. She will eventually take care of herself even if that means purging us from her surface. Reclaiming my personal freedom and showing others that it can be done might just save us from slipping further into the matrix. We might reclaim just a bit of the freedom we use to have.

Thanks so much for being here! Monday we will be back in the kitchen making herb dumplings and fresh Alfredo sauce. Next Saturday, when we get back to this wedding dress, we will be completing the deconstruction and getting the dress ready to put back together! I would love for you to join our tribe by liking and subscribing. Please share these posts with anyone you think might enjoy them.

Thanks again for being here and have a magical day!
